That was good Gary, you should re-post it.

As we get older we sometimes begin to doubt our ability to "make a difference" in the world.  It is at these times that our hopes are boosted by the remarkable achievements of other seniors who have found the courage to take on challenges that would make many of us wither.

Harold Jenkins is such a person:

THIS IS QUOTED FROM HAROLD:
"I've often been asked, 'What do you do now that you're retired?' Well ... I'm fortunate to have a chemical engineering background and one of the things I enjoy most is

converting beer, wine, and whiskey into urine.  It's rewarding, uplifting, satisfyingand fulfilling.  I do it every day and I really enjoy it."
Harold should be an inspiration to us all.

Gary,

I have lots of guy friends, I find it easier some times than talking to girls.

You can't tell me you haven't figured out how to talk to girls by now? There's really no secret, we're all just people, of course if it's sports, forget it........

of course you have to be some what appropriate with your words, everyone's listening,

you'll get there.

Gary,

Personally, women are some of my favorite people;-)  In fact, some of my best friends are women, and those friendships have added significant positive influences in my life.

I think men and women just have different priorities and a fundamental difference in attitude about life. Men like to puff up their chests and strut around, talking about man things like trucks and hunting and sports. Men tend to do really stupid things (and I speak from personal experience) to show that they are indeed a "real man" (particularly if there is a woman around ).  Men tend to have a little bit of the invincibility complex, thinking that they stronger and tougher than they really are - which invariably it lead to conflict and/or chronic lower back pain.

Women on the other hand, like to feather the nest. They tend to be more aware of the personal aspects of other peoples lives, like remembering when it someones birthday or annivesary, or who's getting married or having a baby. They tend to be more nurturing and more thoughtful than men, and in general a lot tougher. But women do have their issues, and  have been known to do some really stupid things to impress a man (and I still don't understand this thing they have about shoes).

Of course any of these sterotypical comments are going to be wrong as often as they are right. The primary thing to remember is that men and women are just people. We all have our hopes and fears, and sometimes it is just nice to share a good conversation with someone of the opposite sex to enlighten our outlook on life. Don't worry about it being appropriate, if you are treating a women as you should any person, with respect and as an equal.

Shauna,

You wanted to see my "new pants"?

Well, here they are:

(you will have to excuse the silly grin)

They were more of a pain-in-the-neck to make than I thought they would be. The leather came from an old trench coat and is laced together with lacing from a worn out laced leather belt. I am still working on a shirt and I am hoping to have it done for the Rendezvous in two weeks.

All there rest of you out there - I hope you are having a wonderful summer. Enjoy it while it lasts.

Gary,

Coke always proofreads my posts to make sure I don't leave out too many words, and to make sure I don't stray too far off the beaten path any really make a fool of myself - its an important function she does for me because she loves me :-)

Jan,

Thanks for the complement on the pants. I have never been to rendezvous and will probably never make it to another one, so I thought I would try to make the most of the experience. The pants and the shirt seemed to have turned out better than I had hoped.

So Jan, can you tell me why all women like shoes so much? I mean a women can never have too many shoes. Why is that?

I think it's funny how our relationships with people change over time.

When I was young, I was always trying to put up some kind of a facade, or false front, for the girls I was trying to impress.  With the guys, we could talk about anything and when I got old enough to try and unravel the mystery of girls, we would talk about them and have deep philosophical discussions on what we thought they were thinking.

When I got older and at least partially decoded the female mystery by convincing one to marry me, my conversations with male friends became more superficial and involved discussions about correcting bad golf swings and where to find the best hunting and fishing spots.

Then I met some very intelligent grown-up women,  usually colleages at work, with whom it was very easy to discuss the deeper subjects of how to manage growing families and how to stay on the good side of the marriage equation. I often found they had some good advice to offer and, for the most part, they were non-judgmental and kind. I learned that if I was kind in return and showed them the respect they deserved, we could talk about a lot of things that I would have been reluctant to share with anyone else. I simply had trust in them and I don't believe any of these friends ever betrayed that trust. I appreciate those friendships still and I'm glad to have had them. I probably saved a lot of money on visits to the shrink.

Well, all my great and wonderful high school friends - I've taken a minute to go back (months) and read all your posts and it makes me sad that i've been so wrapped up in work that I haven't stayed in touch.  Everyone is so smart and insightful and I get the "warm and fuzzies" reading everyone's notes!  All I've been doing is trying to stay sane and keep my stress level from sending me into the next world.  Denny - I want to do what you are doing!!  I'm so jealous!

Summer seems to have slipped by without me noticing and I'm ready to start thinking about a class BBQ at my place.  We may have to call out for Pizza, but I really look forward to seeing everyone.  Maybe we could plan it when some of the "out of towners" can make a road trip to town.....middle of September would be great!

Laughter is such great medicine - I did meet up with Rosemary, Lynette, Elene, Joan and Linda at Tamra's house a couple of weeks ago and we laughed and caught up.  Tamra had both of her knees replaced last week and she is doing fantastic!  She'll be on our race list here pretty quick.

I've just been planning meetings, gathering details and the committee in my head rarely adjourns.  I miss peace and serenity.  I've taken on way too much and need to learn how to say "no."  I just wish all this stress would make me loose weight - oh wait - I think you need to exercise to do that!

My "me" time is up, but I want everyone to know that I'm glad you are talking and posting.  It's so refreshing to know that we all care about each other, even after all this time.   September will slow slightly for me, so let's get a date in mind and plan a party!

Marvin - the guy/girl thing was spot on....although, no matter how right you are and how many times I hear it - I will never be able to figure guys out.  Just when you think the game has leveled, someone tips the board over!!

Life is Good!

Kate

Sorry Marvin I can't explain it, it's just one of those things, just accept it.

Marvin the shoe thing is simple at this age. Clothes don't seem to look the same on our aging bodies, but shoes still look just great. You look great in your pants, what a great job you did on them. Kate i can't wait to come to your house again. Last year was so fun. Pizza would be just great.  You don't need to work that hard for us. We can all bring something too.  My day started with a fun suprise today. Eric Bird dropped into the Beauty Shop to say Hi!. Helen Miner ,Jane's Mom,and Jane Finley, Carol's mom were getting their hair done. They were as happy as I was to see him. It is funny how something so simple as a simple hello to an old friend can mean so much.  Daryl glad to hear you finally figured out how perfect us women are!!!!! A good friend, with either male or female is an important part of your happiness! That is why I am so happy to have all of you guys as friends!! Ready to see all of you at Kate's, just say when!!!  Better start working on our jokes!

I went away for a few days to relax and see the sights.   Found a relaxing spot for a good class party.   Cool from the heat.

Looks like one of the more scenic location in the area Ken. Coke and I will be making a whirlwind visit to Utah Valley in the next week but we will probably forego that location since we sunburn way too easy after living under the clouds for so long here in the Northwest.

Jan and Shauna - I appreciate your advice and guidance on the shoe thing. It seems that it is true but the reasons may change over time. I guess it is just one of those universal mysteries, like the cutiest grandkids mystery. Every grandparent that I have met have always said that they had the cutest grandkids on the planet. That is obviously impossible, they can't all have the cutest grandkids. Then Coke and I became grandparents and I have found out that that mystery is actually true.

Coke and I will be in the area at the end of the week for a short visit. On Friday Coke is being spirited away by Janie Johnson for a get together with a bunch of her high school friends, so I will have to fend for myself. I was wondering if I could persuade some of you "Class of '69 Red Devils" to join me on Friday  for dinner at the Cracker Barrel? Say around 6:00 PM.

Tamra Swenson (Cobbley)

Hello Everyone!  Just out of Rehab for 2 new custom knees.  I haven't felt this good in years!  Everything went well and I am on the road to recovery so that I can join the 'walking group' and going to those fun out of state events!  Hope everyone is well and getting ready for the Autumn season.  Planted a garden this year that finally produced something.....exciting!  I had tried the grow boxes for years, but they didn't work for me.  I think I used the wrong kind of soil or something.  Loving this year's garden........soooooooooooooo delicious.

It was fun reading everyone's posts and getting caught up.  What a great bunch of people.   Tamra

Hi Marvin, I have a problem since I'm invited to the girl party too.  I would like to go to dinner but can we go anywhere but  crackerbarrel. My least favorite place to eat in the county!!  Anyone else have a suggestion. I'll go there if i have too! Whos in, can't wait to see you Marvin and all you other people who haven't been out in a while! Gary are you still out there?

Way to go Tamera, you deserve to feel good.

If you say no to a place Shauna, you get to name where. Lots of good places out there. Does it have to be in Springville?  Marvin should wear his pants though.

If you ever want a party over 20 people, I can get a private room free at Riverside Country Club. Meals are between 15.00 and up, but not bad. I just need to know how many.

Shauna – I am open to suggestions. I am from out of town these days so I don’t have much local information to go on. Where do you think would be a good place to go?

I'd love to go in on pizza, or whatever we decide to do for a party at Kate's and I'll try to be available at the end of the week for a get-together with Marvin. T-Bone is always an option for me.

Great to hear you're doing well, Tamara. Keep it up!

Thanks for contributing to the conversation, everyone!

A day in time.  May 1st, 1971, I think that that right date.  It was a Saturday morning, an event, that will go down in the history books.  A well planed undertaking,  May day up Hobblecreek canyon, even up both, right hand, and left hand forks.  A great team of young people ( us).  Along with the cooperation, of town elders, and even Springville, and County employees.  All donated there time and hard work.  Remember,  we ventured up and down the roadside. picking up trash, car parts, dirty diapers, and some empty beer cans (some of which were probobly  mine).  We bagged  them and they were picked up by guys in all kinds of trucks.  It was a warm, spring day. It was lot of fun.  The teasing each other , the chaseing around.   At the end of the day we hade even funner (is that a word, funner, or I should say more fun.)  I ended up at the Barker place, up left hand fork, with many more tired and thirsty people.  And one person there, he had been helping us all day, one of my favs.    Rex Wardle,  he had no problem with the  celabration we had for the accumplishments of the day.   Anyway  I think we started this be green thing.   Some memories hit me sometimes, and they make me smile, to be proud of such a good buch of people......Hope I didn't bore you to much.......Gary.....Oh almost  forgot to mention the  Rock and Roll, music.        Where anyone of you guys there?

Since Daryl is up for the T-Bone anytime, I think the T-Bone wins. So lets say the T-Bone on Friday around 6:00 PM.

Dave - I'm going to live dangerously and wear my pants ;-)

A cowboy appeared before St. Peter at the  Pearly  Gates.
"Have you ever done anything of particular  merit?"
St. Peter  asked

"Well, I can think of one thing," the cowboy offered

"On a trip to the Black Hills out in  South Dakota , I came upon a gang of bikers who were threatening a young woman.  I directed them to leave her alone, but they wouldn't listen

So,  I approached the largest and most tattooed biker and smacked him in the face, kicked his bike over, ripped out his nose ring, and threw it on the ground.

I yelled, 'Now, back off or I'll kick the crap out of all of  you!"

St.  Peter was impressed, "When did this  happen?"

"Couple of minutes ago.."
