Wow, I just got back from bicycling on what is called the Hiawatha Trail. It is located near the top of Lookout Pass off of I-90, as it goes into Idaho.
Here is a little bit of information on the trail. "It was called one of the most scenic stretches of railroad in the country. When the Milwaukee Railroad was operating, the trains traversed through 11 tunnels and over 9 high trestles. The "Route of the Hiawatha" is the most famous for the long St Paul Pass, or Taft Tunnel which burrows for 8771 feet. (1.66 miles) under the Bitterroot Mountains at the state line. The trail from the Taft Tunnel to Pearson is a very gentle ride on an unpaved gravel road. The grade is 1.7% downhill, a drop of about 1000 ft. in a distance of 13 miles.
That is the nice thing about this Trail, it is all downhill. We took our Boy Scout troop on this ride. We are working on our Cycling merit badge. We saw approx. 300 people on bicycles, ranging in ages from 5 yrs. old to at least 78. It is a great family ride. If you get to the bottom and do not want to bicycle back you can ride the bus back to your car. If you are in the area, and want a great experience, this is the place. The first tunnel you go though is 1.7 miles long. You need a good light on your bicycle or helmet.
Here are some pictures of us on the trail:
Here we are getting ready for the ride

We are heading into the 1.7 mile tunnel: very dark as we get into the tunnel:

I am on one of the many trestles we cross, and you can see another one in the background:

Just a note, my assistant Scoutmaster thought he had a good light on his bicycle as he went into one of the tunnels, but he could not see very well and ended up crashing. Well, he forgot to take off his sunglasses. A great laugh.
I hope you guys don't mind the pictures. I think they are worth a thousand words.
