Trish Whiting (Walter)

Thanks to all my classmates who sent me a Happy Birthday Wish! (especially the cake from Daryl)

It snowed at my house on my birthday in Phoenix. That was a first!

Wow, that cake tasted good. I heard they shut down a golf tournament because of that snow. Global warming?

We went to the Mountain View, Springville High basketball game last night in Springville. I only saw Carl Jensen, Ann Memory, and Duane Paxton that I knew. They didn't see me. It is a different place, Gary.

Dennis Sorensen and I are eating at Applebys today at 11:30 in Orem if anyone wants to join us.

Oh, Springville won. That's different from when we were there too.

I’d like to rant (to complain or talk loudly and angrily for a long time, sometimes saying unreasonable things) about the current situation our country (planet) is in.

How does that Billy Idol song go? “The worlds gone crazy and everything’s hazy --”

It is pretty obvious that the political system in the US, the government of the most powerful nation (currently) in the world, is broken. We have lost our way as a nation and we don’t know what the hell we are doing or where we are going. Is this the way you pictured the future?

I find it ironic that with all that information at our fingertips, that so few of government officials (all those people that we elected) bother to actually research any of the issues they pass laws to address. I guess that most of our elected officials are just like a majority of the rest of the general population - they really don’t understand the time-value of money, let alone how the national and international economic systems work. They are probably above average if they can still do long division. They were elected to help solve the problems we face but they are basically under informed (or ideologically biased) on every issue, and all the big money that is available to elect our officials has corrupted their desire to do what they know is right.

With the advent of the internet, the knowledge of the world became instantly available. Imagine that, a tool that could give you the answer for almost any question you could ask. The problem is that that answer may not be true - in fact there is far more misinformation out there than there are hardcore facts and data. There is so much information out there that it is beyond comprehension - it is information overload, so you have to make sure that the information you use is true. It is easy to be deceived if you are not careful.

The problems are many. The planet’s resources are limited (and so far mankind has been extremely efficient at converting them to garbage and industrial waste). The world population is nearly seven billion and growing. The ecosystem has been significantly degraded, and changes in the mix of atmospheric gases is changing the climate. We have allowed the introduction of genetically modified plants (like corn that has had a gene for insecticide  production from a bacteria spliced into its DNA) to be released in the environment without fully understanding how they are going to affect the other living organisms on the planet (like us) and there is no way to recall them.

Our government is not only not addressing the real problems, they are busy creating make-believe problems to keep us all distracted and quarreling with one another. And that wonderful tool (the internet) has morphed into the virtual world, where people (myself included) can spend all their time distracted and avoiding dealing with the screwed up real world. All is not lost yet, but we are definitely headed in the wrong direction (globally) and time is running out.

The world has become so complex and is changing so fast that if we don’t start addressing the real problems of the planet - then what?

It kind of makes me glad I am not any younger than I am, because I think the future is going to be a very intense and challenging place to live. I fear for my children and grandchildren.

Marvin, I'll give a response to this after I've let it stir around in me for a bit.

For now, I'd like to wish Brenda Morgan Bradley a Happy Birthday! I often miss the good old days at Banta. I hope all is well with you!

Democracy... while it lasts is more bloody than either aristocracy or monarchy. Remember, democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There is never a democracy that did not commit suicide.                                                                                                             John Adams

So, Marvin, here's the question. Have we reached the point in our country where our government is on the point of suicide? There certainly are signs of it. The two major political parties are doing everything they can to thwart progress. The founding fathers seemed to understand that there needs to be compromise, at times, to keep things moving forward. I also believe that they were motivated by purer motives of service and sacrifice. I don't believe any of them considered themselves "career politicians" unlike a great number of the members of our current congress who have been there for term after term after term. Orrin Hatch has been there since we were in our twenties! I don't care how much good he claims to be able to do, there should be more voices and more ideas from men and women whose interests are in doing what the nation and the world need. Democracy exhausts  and wastes itself when the selfish interests of individuals become more important than what is good and right for the nation.

It kind of sounds like I'm calling for term limits here, but what chance does that have when the ones who need to make that decision are the ones who want to live out their lives in fame and glory in Washington?

What is it when they say we are not a Democracy, but a Republic Dayrl? I think that if we wanted to get Washington to fix things we would just hold their paychecks until they do. I think there would be rapid results. I know as I've been an employee and employer that you don't get paid if you don't do the job, in fact you can get canned, unless you work for the government.

Morality, like art, means drawing a line someplace. (Oscar Wilde)

You have some deep thoughts Marvin, and a good sense of what we may leave our childrens' children but you should fill your time with thinking about what you are going to do for our big reunion in 2019. We voted you to be in charge.

Yeah, Marvin, it was unanimous.  Congratulations!

Gary,    Last time I renewed it was $35 but I have heard places you can up for $25.   I figured that they could luse the money.

This is time of year tends to give a person a little hope, as the cold grey days of winter start to give way to brightly colored days of spring. The daffodils are blooming and the swelling buds on the trees are getting ready to burst into a new sea of green. The days are getting noticeably longer and and the sunshine is glorious on the days it shines through that grey overcast. It makes a person glad to be alive.

Dave and Daryl - I would be glad to be in charge, as long as everyone else in our graduating class helps to figure out the what, when and where to get the maximum number of our classmates to show up. By 2019 (a year I never even considered seeing in my lifetime) we will all be old fuddy duddies (hell, I might even be retired by then).

Marvin, way to step up! You are a good man and there are many of us more than willing to assist in the process. With things like Skype available to us, there is no reason we can't have meetings involving many class members in many places. Who knows where technology will have us in 2019 when we're working on the details. it will be an important milestone - our 50 year reunion!

Thanks for reminding us that spring is at hand. It has been a long and harsh winter here in Utah and we are all looking forward to warmer weather. I saw my first snowdrops blooming just a couple of days ago. Keep the faith, brother!

Good stuff going on..  We had a LDS ward division here in Mapleton two weeks ago and the 23rd ward was created which I am a member of now.  Got  my home teaching assignment and I go to Cathy Parkins Deveraux. Small world.  Had  a good visit with her last night.  She is retired and has three grandkids and is glad that winter is almost over.

Eric- I'll bet it is quite satisfying reconnecting with one our classmate in the area. That is one of the real disadvantages of living so far away from Happy Valley (Utah Valley), I never have to worry about running into someone from high school here in the Seattle area (maybe Steven Lynn or Dusty Collins if I am really lucky). I know that when I visit Springville I always hope that I will run into someone from the Class of '69, but it is a real long shot anymore. I guess that is why reunions were invented.

With all my whining about the government and the economy I thought it was interesting to find a 12 year old Canadian girl that has part of the problem figured out:http: //www.flixxy.com/12-year-old-explains-canadian-banking-system.htm#.UTkcYKWR_0c

Smart kid! And she's totally right. The problem is she runs afoul of the "Golden Rule."  He with the gold makes the rules.

As long as there are greedy people who are only interested in their own wealth and power, there won't be any changes to solve the problems, but kudos to this girl. She's only 12, but maybe she can convince enough of her generation to change the world over the next 50 years.

I'm still here, just haven't had any time to get on the computer! Lucky you Eric to get to visit Cathy, she is such a great person! It's a Small world After All!!! Oh ya, i just got back from disneyland. I love that place! The new Cars ride is so fun, still love Pirute's the best!  Tomorrow we are going to St. George to watch the girl Red Devils Sotball team play. My Granddaughter Malia plays catcher for th team. I fill you in how they do when i get home!

Holy **** Denny! I was waiting all week to wish you a happy birthday last Saturday and then I forgot! Now, I just saw you at the historical society office and forgot again! Please don't boot me out of your circle of friends.

I wanted to get in on the political conversation that Marvin started, but realize I'm too late and maybe the fire has gone out.

I think power corrupts absolutely.  So term limits sounds good to me.  We should only pay our politicians one dollar a year and then we may get true people who really want to serve.

I have to say I disagree on the global warming aspect.

I would love to go to lunch or whatever with all of you, but I will never be in Utah again.

Denny...I can't believe you let your birthday pass without letting us know so we could do a Happy Birthday Lunch with you!  Well Happy Birthday anyway late my friend.  How old are you know 55?  We need to plan a lunch toward the last week of the month to celebrate the month's birthday's,  I am up North most every Thursday.  Let us know.

Debbie...Never is a pretty strong word, what if a couple of old bikers with the same name came into your quaint little town and talked you into going for a ride and took you to Utah?  Just wondering, you know us members of the class of 69 have done stranger things.

Daryl...I sure hope the next time we do lunch you can take time away from your acting career and working non-stop to come and join us.  Eric what has been your excuse?  I drive three hours just for lunch and I know we would really like to see you again, it is getting close to golf season.  Gary, what is your excuse?  I have been leaving all of my cop friends home so you will come.

Everyone have a great Easter Weekend.  DS

Well said Debbie, Dennis It's always good if you can slip a Birthday by unnoticed but thank you. I am always up for lunch. Daryl is that Charles Darwin on the PI picture?

You're excactly right, Dennis! Even with the party hat he looks a little glum. He was probably envisioning the future with all the problems we are now dealing with - the ultimate course of evolution. See you at the historical society this afternoon.

Hey what about lunch on Thur. the 28? It is Dave's Birthday and it would cover the rest of March.
