There's a very interesting article referring to Doug Cloward's role in starting the LDS Pioneer Trek program. He was a pretty amazing guy! Here's a link https://byustudies.byu.edu/article/handcart-trekking-from-commemorative-reenactment-to-modern-phenomenon/

My actual birthday is on Thursday, the 22nd. I was wondering if any of you would like to join me at La Casita that evening at 6 pm where we could drown our sorrows together? Let me know if you can come and I'll try to reserve us some space.

Hi All,

I can't belive my scheduling good fortune.  It's not like I'm a real busy man but I've been doing family and work related stuff in Utah County over the last week.  I'll defintely plan to attend.  I had a lot of fun the last two times.  Hope you don't get sick of me.

Clint

How could we ever get sick of seeing you, Clint? It's always a pleasure to see you and any other member of our class at a get-together. We have another opportunity coming soon! Linda Schardine is coming to town in August and has asked if we can get together, again, at Strap Tank on the 17th or 18th. (a Tuesday and a Wednesday) I'd love to see all of you there! I think evenings work best. Around 6 maybe? Chime in and let me know who can make it and I'll see if we can get a reservation as we get closer to the day. Let's not waste a single chance to keep the Spirit of 69 alive!

Thanks Daryl for organizing this..

I hope I get to see a whole bunch of you!! I've been having a fun summer and I hope it continues.

My grand daughter is getting married on the 13th of August, I usually don't like coming until September, when it's not so hot, but I have some fun adventures planned.

Later.........

I like the 13. But I know in order to meet up we need ether the 17 or 18. Note, the 17 is the first day of school in Alpine and Nebo school districts. I don't know if that will have much impact on anyone. Looking forward to meeting up again.

Cindy and I are planning to be in Utah that week, so we will stop by the gathering of SHS 69ers early in the evening and say hello to everyone. Looking forward to seeing you again. We can't stay for dinner due to another later commitment and my ongoing almost no immunity against anything after kidney transplant 4 months ago. Anti-rejection drugs are limiting social interaction for a while, especially with COVID lerking. Other than that I'm feeling perfectly healthy and happy to have a new lease on life.

That 's great you are doing so good Blair!  Looking forward to seeing you guys and Linda! Plus the rest of the 69ers of course! Jan Jill Shauna and Kathie will be there!

Long ago and far away, in a land that time forgot,

Before the days of Dylan , or the dawn of Camelot.

There lived a race of innocents, and they were you and me,

For Ike was in the White House in that land where we were born,

Where navels were for oranges, and Peyton Place was porn.

We longed for love and romance, and waited for our Prince,

Eddie Fisher married Liz, and no one's seen him since.

We danced to 'Little Darlin,' and sang to 'Stagger Lee'

And cried for Buddy Holly in the Land That Made Me, Me.   Only girls wore earrings then, and 3 was one too many,

And only boys wore flat-top cuts, except for Jean McKinney.

And only in our wildest dreams did we expect to see,

A boy named George with Lipstick, in the Land That Made Me   ,   Me   . We fell for Frankie Avalon, Annette was oh, so nice,

And when they made a movie, they never made it twice.

We didn't have a Star Trek Five, or Psycho Two and Three,

Or Rocky-Rambo Twenty in the Land That Made Me, Me.

Miss Kitty had a heart of gold, and Chester had a limp,

And Reagan was a Democrat whose co-star was a chimp.   We had a Mr. Wizard, but not a Mr. T,

And Oprah couldn't talk yet, in the Land That Made Me, Me.

We had our share of heroes, we never thought they'd go,

At least not Bobby Darin, or Marilyn Monroe.   For youth was still eternal, and life was yet to be,

And Elvis was forever in the Land That Made Me, Me.

We'd never seen the rock band that was Grateful to be Dead,

And Airplanes weren't named Jefferson , and Zeppelins were not Led. And Beatles lived in gardens then, and Monkees lived in trees,

Madonna was Mary in the Land That Made Me, Me.

We'd never heard of microwaves, or telephones in cars,

And babies might be bottle-fed, but they were not grown in jars.

And pumping iron got wrinkles out, and 'gay' meant fancy-free,

And dorms were never co-Ed in the Land That Made Me, Me.

We hadn't seen enough of jets to talk about the lag,

And microchips were what was left at the bottom of the bag.

And hardware was a box of nails, and bytes came from a flea,

And rocket ships were fiction in the Land That Made Me, Me.

T-Birds came with portholes, and side shows came with freaks,

And bathing suits came big enough to cover both your cheeks.

And Coke came just in bottles, and skirts below the knee,

And Castro came to power near the Land That Made Me, Me. We had no Crest with Fluoride, we had no Hill Street Blues,

We had no patterned pantyhose or Lipton herbal tea,

Or prime-time ads for those dysfunctions in the Land That Made Me,Me.

There were no golden arches, no Perrier to chill,

And fish were not called Wanda, and cats were not called Bill.

And middle-aged was 35 and old was forty-three,

And ancient were our parents in the Land That Made Me, Me.

But all things have a season, or so we've heard them say,

And now instead of Maybelline we swear byRetin-A.

They send us invitations to join AARP,

We've come a long way, baby, from the Land That Made Me, Me.

So now we face a brave new world in slightly larger jeans,

And wonder why they're using smaller print in magazines.

And we tell our children's children of the way it used to be,

Long ago and far away in the Land That Made Me, Me.

If you didn't grow up in the fifties, you missed the greatest time in history.

Hope you enjoyed this read as much as I did.

I don't Know if you need a headcount for Tuesday the 17th @ 6:00pm but I'll come also. Haven't seen any of you in so long it sounds like a lot of fun.

Roger outstanding read. It hit home with me. I let my grandkids read it, just to find out how long it took to exsplan it to them. Anyway thanks for putting things into perspective.

Roger, If Brenda does not know her class is meeting on Friday, 6:30 pm at Jo Bandido's. That is if you have any contact with her.

P.S. For a headcount put me down for two. Glenna and I. We going to her class (1972) dinner on Friday so we have back-to-back nights out.

Until Thursday here is a smile for you :)

Hello Class friends-

Looks like Elene and I will be attending the Tuesday event at the strap tank - Looking forward to seeing Linda and everyone else - it's always fun!!

Daryl Tucker

We should be all set for this evening at Strap Tank. I made the reservation for 12 at 6 pm last week, but if there are a few more coming I'm sure they'll fit us in. The reservation is in my name and I'll be cutting close on being there right at six, so if any of you get there a little early you can ask about it under my name. I'm looking forward to another great gathering of 69ers!

Hi All,

Apologies again for the late confirmation.  Time slipping past me and I'm really not that busy. I'm planning on attending.

Clint
