Marvin Dansie
It is Thansgiving morning and I just got back from playing a couple hours of racquetball with about a half dozen other guys.
I was talking to one of the guys after the games when we were headed to the locker room, he goes by Tom but his real name is Mafoosta. He is a dentist that came from Iran about 20 years ago. I asked if he and his family celebrated Thanksgiving with the traditional American Thanksgiving dinner. His response was a bit surprising.
He told me "Yes" they do, and they invite quite a number of friends to join them. He said it was his favorite holiday and it was the best reason in the world to have a holiday. It is a day to be thankful and to give thanks for all that we have - to celebrate the good things in life and to share those with others - to encourage one another to strive to make life better for themselves and others in the coming year. I could tell it was a heartfelt response as the tears welled up in his eyes. I don't know the path that he has traveled, but I do know that he will be giving thanks today for what many of us take for granted.
It is easy to become a bit jaded dealing with all hassles and inconveniences of our everyday lives, but we all have those things in our lives that we truely cherish and are thankful for - and today is a day to reflect on those.
I hope you all have a wonderful and Happy Thanksgiving.
