You all are doing so well at the forum. It's to bad it's about your parents UTawna, Dusty, and Nancy. We have been lucky to have come from that generation.

Sorry about your old age Daryl. You too, Dennis Sorensen. Happy Birthday.

My most sincere condolances to all who have lost parents. I know lliving so far away it is a hard one. It looks like the parade was lots of fun. I have heard comments from people who saw the bus. It was a definite flashback to the sixties.

I just wanted to add my condolences, too, to all of you who have lost loved ones. Also, it would have been great to have seen you at the big 'bus' event; it looked like a great party!  Now that so many of us have lots of free time with retirement or nearing retirement, I want to encourage you to serve a mission.  It will bring much joy to you and to many others and you will have a great time, too!                                                    We love it here in Japan!

Denny, I was inspired to write by your barn picture. On Memorial Day, I was visiting graves in Springville.  I noticed the barn in the distance.  I had to drive over and see it.  Richard Childs was a life-long friend.  We grew up in the same neighborhood, ran with each other in school, and roomed together at Snow College. I was often an inept helper with him at what he called the Yard where the barn sits.  Steered the flat bed truck while he fed the sheep type of stuff.  Nothing like the real work he did.  I remember the barn and the Yard when it was a vibrant well place.  It's part of my youth.  I actually had my first taste of hard liquor in that barn (Cheery Slo Gin, awful).

Parkinsons Disease took Richard a few years ago.  The Yard is over grown and looks basically dead and the barn is obviously dying.  I'm so glad you caught the essence of the barn before it's death.  First the cemetary and then the barn.  It was a day full of strong emotions for me.  I felt the loss of family, friends, and my youth.  As I lingered by the barn, memories of the good times started coming back.  It was actually pretty fun hanging out at the old Yard.  The place was a sancturary from authority.

Your picture will always evoke very personal memories and emotions for me.  I think the highest praise for a photographer.  I'm sure that those of you dealing with recent loss will also find enough good memories to help cushion the hurt.

Nice post, Clint!  Great to hear from so many others of you who have added your comments to this forum recently. Variety, as the saying goes...

Or the old saying about the worm in the horseradish.

Dave-

Are you refering to the old saying about "its better to find a whole worm than half a worm"?

Good meditation at "the yard," Clint. I did get the entire feeling from looking at Denny's photo. I had other locations that made me thoughtful as you mentioned. Well said.
Any creature that could live in horseradish would be like the creatures that live in the thermal vents at the bottom of the sea to my mind. Maybe there's something living in the hot sauce.

To a worm in horseradish, the world is horseradish

Not anything to do with that but happy birthday Larry S.

So, has anyone been doing anything exciting this summer?

I know there are a number of things I’d like to do, but it seems that life keeps getting in the way.

I’ve been trying to talk Coke into taking up kayaking in Puget Sound with me. I’m sure we could both use the exercise (and if I am going to exercise I want it to be fun and exciting). But, so far I have not been successful - I am still working on her.

I use to really enjoying windsurf on the sound, but all my surfing partners wound up moving. I think it is kind of a dying sport anyway, one that is being replaced by kite surfing. But instead of taking up kite surfing I think I would rather take up kayaking (it is always nice to have something that still floats when the wind dies).

The summer is just flying by - its already August. It is the time of year that I start to notice the shortening in the length of each day - about 2 minutes a day currently. It is all a reminder that time is running out, to live every day like it may be my last. I have decided that if there are things that I might like to do in my life - now is the time.

It was fun though, to start the summer with the class reunion - it kind of gives life perspective.

I have been thinking about the next one. What would make a reunion that everyone really wanted to attend? I think that Dave's bus idea made for a fabulous reunion (one that is going to be hard to top), and those of you that missed it really missed out (beside the rest of us missed you). I know its not for another five years, but you never know when there might be a good idea or two out there. I want you all to think about it. I think we should make it a big deal - something special ;-)

Hi Everyone, Marvin we do need to think hard since it wil be 50 big ones!!! Really who would have ever thought we would get this old so fast. But i still refuse to act like it. You wondered what we have been doing fun this summer. Well I was in charge of our family reunion. We got one of those big water slides and yes I went down it with the kids. And I was the only old person to go down it, clothes and all. And I didn't even win the wet T-Shirt contest!!!Kidding!! Of course  I sprained my finger.       I'm so sorry to hear of all of you that have lost their parents. It is so hard to say goodbye but we are all so lucky to have such good people in our lives. Utawna i loved your Dad. I enjoyed cutting his hair. Even though he was having a hard time he had such a great sense of humor. Now to the barn. Denny I love the picture. Clint seems like a few of the barns in Mapleton were busy in those days. We had to take ours down 3 years ago and it was like a death to me. I felt a little guilty morning a barn. But if any of you hung out with me I'll bet you we're out in our barn one time or another. One night we we're playing tag out there. Being stupid I forot how dumb sheep are. Well we scared them and they smothered some of them. The next day my Dad was so mad because he thought a dog chased them. Sorry Dad one more thing I didn't get caught doing.  How about it guys, let's here some stories that you did and didn't get caught doing or did????? Happy Birthday Larry! and whoever I have forgotten!!!

I've never had a barn but have had my barn door open, especially since I've gotten older. I gotta tell somebody. I was talking to a man in China and he was telling me something was a waste of time, then said "it's like taking your pants off to fart." Not an old Chinese saying but pretty funny. I may have to erase this tomorrow.

Hello All,

I've been in Daytona Beach, Florida with my son.  Relatives of my late wife live in the area.  Marv is kayaking and windsurfing on the Puget Sound while I'm lying on the beach and wading in the mild Atlantic worrying the whole time about sharks.  Pretty funny!  My highest level of activity was walking on the beach.   Go Marv!  Hot and humid.  I'll take Utah any day.

Shauna, had to laugh about the sheep.  The goofy sheep always freaked me out.  The Ag Club guys (Richard, Kent Hansen, Craig Ivie, Class 1970) always gave me crap about it.  They also messed with me with the 400 lb. pigs that they raised as class projects.  I may have been smoking a little something.  Please don't judge me harshly.  After all, it was the 60's.

Clint's nightmare...

Sorry, Shauna, I've been racking my brain and can't remember any trouble I got into back in high school...I was an angel among devils. wink

Kenny and I ran into Rick Patten at the gas station a few days ago, and much later, were on our way. There's always something really fun about running into a fellow class of 69er.

Good one Daryl!  Nice to open up the work day with a good laugh.  I've always been a little neurotic (maybe a lot).
