I don't know how I missed it, but I need to apologize to Maile Bowman Walker for missing her birthday on February 28th.

Happy Birthday (late) Maile!

The irony of life. Stephen Hawking dies on Albert Einstein's 139th birthday (it also happens to be "Pi Day", that is 3.14).

Farewell Stephen, and thanks for your insights about the mysteries of the universe.

Marvin,

I also read in the news this morning that he was born on the 300th anniversary of Galileo's death.

"There were many other significant similarities between Hawking and Einstein. Both of them suffered from brain issues and died at the age of 76. They got married twice in their lifetime. Einstein and Hawking, both had an IQ of around 160. Both of them had interests in the same topics and they have inspired numerous movies on their lives."

They've got me beat for sure.... I couldn't 'get' Geometry frown

You may get the impression I'm only on here to pass on birthday wishes, but I can also make a comment from time to time.

Since the subject thread on Stephen Hawking has been introduced, Here's a favorite quote of his I like, "I have noticed even people who claim everything is predestined, and that we can do nothing to change it, look before they cross the road."

The passing of Stephen Hawking is a major historical event in the field of science in our lifetimes. He may have been trapped in a body that he could not move, but he was able to see things that most mortal men can not - to comprehend the incomprehensible.

When I was in high school I never took physics. I didn’t actually know what “physics” was all about, but I was sure I wouldn’t like it - besides, it was just for geeks. It wasn’t until I was forced to take a physics course while I was in the navy that I realized what a fascinating field of study it is. When I finally went back to college it was one of my favorite classes and since my first introduction to the subject I have always had a passing interest in the field.

To me the study of physics is the process of discovering the fundamental physical laws that make the universe work. In doing so, we discover that many things are far different than what our everyday experience would lead us to believe. Physicists discover the physical laws, and as a mechanical engineer I spent decades trying to apply those laws to solve real world problems.

I have the utmost respect for the likes of Hawking, Einstein, Newton and the countless others that spent their lives trying to really understand the universe, and in doing so have allowed us to enjoy an unprecedented quality of life (with technology that is indistinguishable from magic).

Tawna - In high school math was never one of my strong points either. I later realized that the teachers had something to do with that. You and many of the rest of the class of '69' (including myself) graduated as mathphobes. I later discovered it was something I didn't have to be afraid of and that it is actually quite useful at times.

Daryl - You rock. You keep this website going and I do appreciate it. I look forward to many more of your forum comments.

Thanks for your post, Marvin, and for the boost! I think you're right about the way math was taught in "our day." I found out, after the fact, that understanding mathematical principles can be a useful skill in the so-called real world and eventually overcame my aversion to it. Even though Stephen Hawking didn't profess a belief in Heaven, I hope he's up there having a great time running around and yakking his head off with Einstein and Newton.

Today we have a triple-header of birthday wishes for Utawna Johnson Witney, Leslie Brinkerhoff Giles and Shauna Davis Noland! Hope you all have a wonderful day!

I am planning on makeing a trip to Utah sometime during the last two weeks of May to see some friends and relatives and I would like to use the opportunity to meet with any classmates that would like to discuss what we should do for our 50th class reunion.

We could meet for lunch or dinner and see if we can come up with some good ideas for the reunion. Since I live about 900 miles from Springville I really don't know what kinds of suitable venues are available in the area anymore. My travel date is flexible, so I am open to suggestions as to when would be a good time to meet.

Marvin, I'm sure we can get together for a discussion about the reunion when you come down in May. Richard Hjorth will also be working with you as chairman since he inherited that responsibility by virtue of being our Class President. There are also still quite a few of us living locally who can assist in the planning, so let's see which day works best and a good time and place to meet. This is a big one, so let's all work together to make it special!

Daryl How about this one?

Happy Birthday to Nancy Dallin Baker on the 27th and Dave Lynn on the 28th!

Dennis Sorensen and I have been talking about a project to be part of our 50 year reunion next year. He had a great idea for having people lip sync to some of the classic 60s songs we loved in jr. high and high school. I'm thinking we could put together a montage of "music videos" of you guys lip syncing the "soundtrack of our lives." We could play it for everyone on the night of our reunion dinner. So, even if you are currently living in Timbuktu, you can record yourself on your phone camera, or whatever and send it to me for compiling into a feature film. Let's hear some of your thoughts!

Thank You Daryl !!

...this states 2:30 in the morning...but it's only 11:30 where I'm at  :)

Happy Birthday on Monday to Ray Newbury! Since I was a day late on Ray's, I'll be a day early wishing one to Susan Hardy Stutznegger tomorrow! Now, I think I'm even.

I think the video thing would be awesome.  Also I think the best reunion that we have had was the one at the high school ... and  it was probably the least costly.  Just my thoughts.

Gee, Shauna! You're way ahead of me! I thought I was keeping pretty good track and then I noticed I had forgotten to wish Happy Birthday to Dan Richins on the 11th, to Cindy Oakley Packard on the 14th and Larry Lowery, yesterday on the 18th! Sorry you guys!

And, just to make sure I don't blow it on the rest of the April birthdays, here are best birthday wishes to Ken Strong on the 21st, to Tamara Swenson Cobbley on the 22nd, to Sandy Knight Boswell on the 23rd and Vicki Vincent on the 23rd and Steve Nance on the 27th.

Wow! April of 1951 brought a nice crop of babies!

Just wondering if all the school's had May day and wound the Maypole! I wish that I had some pictures! My Uncle took movie pictures of us in Mapleton. If anyone has some, how about posting them! How much did you guys like it? I know most of us girls loved it!! What was your favorite colors.  I thought the purple and yellow was the prettiest!!!! And all you people who never reply, let's here something from you!!!!

04/25/18 12:43 PM #3701

Lynette Larsen (Magliocco)

Totally loved the purple and yellow maypole ribbons, and yes, the girls did love it more than the boys. Of course, Mapleton's May Day was the most fun. (And since I have nothing to compare it with, I will continue to believe that statement as I sink deeper into an 'old age' fog) I remember lots of parents showed up. Shauna: Do you remember the year we did some kind of Wizard of Oz skit? I was a lion--not THE lion, just one of them. My mom dyed a sheet in the bath tub and then sewed the costume. I think it was on May Day also. And I suppose all the moms made cookies and punch.

Totally LOVED winding the Maypole....every color was so pretty....
